I think you are so right. I have been thinking about how often I do that with God. It all goes back to approaching God as a vending machine and basing the whole relationship on what I get out of it. "God is supposed to make me happy, rich, popular, etc." Or, "God is supposed to take care of all my problems." When He does those things we can make the mistake of being thankful for what He has done, and forgeting the fact that we are in a relationship with Him, and we should be thankful for Him.

The Israelites made the same mistake. When God blessed them, they forgot about Him and went after other gods. When they were in trouble, they ran back to Him.

As I was reading the passage of scripture from Luke this week I was reminded of something I heard once: "Often when we say 'I love you' what we really mean 'I love what you do for me.'"

In my notes from this sermon I noted the similarity between discipling and mentoring. Years ago at Promise Keepers they taught how we each need a "Paul", a "Barnabus" and a "Timothy" in our lives. A "Paul" is a spiritual mentor, someone who is more spiritually mature to help guide us. A "Barnabus" is someone who is at a similar place spiritually who we can be accountable with (LifeGroups are a good place to find them). A "Timothy" is someone who is not as mature spiritually that we can mentor (disciple).

One thing that I keep being reminded of with the past few sermons is an article titled "Tyranny of the Urgent" that I first encountered in a Navigators study. The following quote sums up the topic of the paper, “Your greatest danger is letting the urgent things crowd out the important.”

You can read the article by going to

Thanks Lee. It's an honor to be able to write these little studies. I hope that it is helpful to people and inspires them to spend time with God in His word.

Tom,
I really appreciate all the effort and time you put into this blog. I'm sure it is a great help to Casey. How fortunate he is to have someone like you on the team. This most recent post is outstanding keep up the good work. As you know I believe that one of the main calling of all believers is to be reconcilers, so part II of this series is very special to me.
Once again you are doing a great job keep it up.
